PAGE: Could you tell us about the marketing strategy and the value of Pakistan Super League?
Jalal Uddin: There is no denying the fact that prior to the concept of PSL, dilapidated situation of international cricket in Pakistan was delineated by almost everyone in every stratum of the society. More or less everyone wanted the resumption of international cricket in Pakistan. The concept of PSL was vital in terms of getting the attention of the world. Insecurity was deemed the sole reason for the vacuum of international cricket in Pakistan. Pakistanis are rather passionate about cricket. There are ample leagues such as Big Bash League, Sri Lankan Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, IPL etc. generating staggering revenues. PSL is on its way to becoming one of the leading leagues in the international arena fascinating the world class cricketers to play in Pakistan for PSL.
Way back in May 2016, it was announced that the inaugural season of the PSL had yielded a whopping profits of US$2.6 million. It was terrific to know that the commercial rights to the initial franchises were sold for US$93 million for a span of 10 years in December 2015. The market value of PSL is far more today vis-a-vis 2017 when it as was up to US$300 million.
PAGE: Local stadiums play a crucial role in nurturing talent for PSL. Your views:
Jalal Uddin: Infrastructure comprising stadiums do play a crucial role however more significant is the participation of the players in team competitions which equip them with techniques and inflate their confidence. Quality grounds enhance the value of a tournament eventually attracting inspectors, players etc.
PAGE: What is your perspective about the infrastructure development for PSL?
Jalal Uddin: Infrastructure plays a vital role in any sport. Top stadium facilities attract fans, help players to perform with full skills etc. Infrastructure is one of the elements that enhance the value of the game. PSL matches are being played on top available grounds and nothing could be better than this. Moreover, a lot more could be done by having a joint strategy by the Government, PCB, Franchises etc. There is no harm in learning from others leagues.
PAGE: What is your take on upcoming hi-tech cricket stadium in Islamabad?
Jalal Uddin: Islamabad stadium will definitely be a good addition. I presume, priority of this kind of stadium should be for Karachi or Lahore. That huge stadium in Islamabad will be under-utilized.
